Been cactus for almost a week now. In all seriousness, if one of their people is here, could we know why?

Recently OCAU went down and Whirlpool hosted their "site's out" page and maintained a thread on it, I don't see why like minded places can't help each other out in times of need.

Any news, or is it time to find a successor and bury RP once and for all?

if railpage were a racehorse, it would have been shot or introduced to a friendly snake. maybe someone needs to check that their mum hasn't unplugged the power board controlling the server

Maybe their old 386sx-25 has blown up and they're having trouble getting parts.

Did anyone see the news last night.

Indian hackers have hacked into Australian websites, in protest of the attacks on Indian students in Melbourne.
The Hijackers have, Encripted the data, then deleted it, costing the company $100,000 worth of damage.

By the sound of it, they have done great and lasting damage to the website on those servers.

Wonder if Railpage was a victim of this?

In any case, given that top Australian companies have been targeted, ones with the top security possible, makes me sure that we could not blame Railpage for getting an attack like this.

Pretty simple. If a major company doesn't have a quality backup of their website they pretty much deserve what they get there. If they have a good backup, it's a simple case of restoring the server, and perhaps upgrading the security.

Looking back at when this thread was started, it appears significant that it goes down in February.
Might be the time of year a yearly bill becomes due and isn't paid. None the less, it's easy to speculate about it's financials.

More surprisingly there has been no announcement by the RP team, couldn't be to hard to communicate it's future to it's followers, rather than treating them with a brick wall of silence.

In the end, I'm more concerned about the information that it has accumulated over the years, such threads such as woodfords NE Line updates, Oaklands line etc etc, It's been a pleasure following the rebuilding. Top marks to all that have actively reported the upgrade/rebuilding (strike out whichever is applicable). For this to be lost is a tragedy.

Believe it or not after 4 weeks I'm even missing Rodrick's seemingly endless retorts. :(

Its worth noting that the Google cache still has a lot of the threads saved prior to it going dark, and that the Wayback Machine (http://web.archive.org/) has almost complete cached copies of RP from years gone by.

Yes, that is the worst part of it.

I have given up trying to access it and only look in here or on Wheels on Steel, Whirlpool or even Railbastard to see if there is any real new news.

Now that the outage is into it's fourth week the regular members of the Railpage "community" have no idea whether to continue to wait patiently or to transfer their input to here or Wheels on Steel or somewhere else.

I know all about Railpage having been a free site, etc, etc and that it's owners are under no legal obligation to communicate but there is such an old-fashioned thing as "good manners".

Even IF the site eventually comes back it will need some time to recover it's former vitality and keeping in touch with former posters is the best way to ensure that this happens as quickly as possible.

As noted above, if it is an outage 'by choice', then I would have at least expected some prior warning to RPs members about the impending, albeit temporary(?), downtime.
Sure, there is no requirement to do so, but such advice I would consider good form, and common courtesy.

But if they are a victim of foul play, I hope RP Admin can get the site back up and running asap.
Though after 4 weeks, I am wondering what is going on :?

You can't say that was the reason for sure, and besides some of those that attacked the students have Indian backgrounds according to some news reports.

I thought Webslave posted on Whirlpool after your post on Whirlpool, and he did say that it was non-technical in nature, and said in another that's all is appropriate to say.
