Metro T cars, A and B end.

Melbourne's Suburban trains.

Metro T cars, A and B end.

Postby heisdeadjim » Sun Jan 31, 2010 4:12 pm

I asked at the other place, but they're, er, having a break from the internet.

As an aside to another discussion, I pondered how does one tell the A end from the B end on Metro's rolling stock, on the T cars?

Obviously the A end of a M car is the driver's cabin.

And I'm hoping for the external visual clues that a passenger would see.

xTrapolis - the panto is at the B end?

Hitachi - the roof is lower over one end, but I forget which? Obviously the converted D car should be obvious.

Siemens?

Comeng?

Firstly, It's No.1 end and No.2 end, not A-end and B-end.

X'trapolis: panto at No. 2 end.

Hitachi's: In both original and converted trailers, the saloon ceiling is "lower" at No.2 end.

Siemens: The Emergency intercoms are on A-side, and there's an extra camera at the No. 2 end. The Transistion Coupler "Cradle" is located towards the No.2 end.

Comeng: B-side is where the Brake unit is, when looking at the brake unit, No.1 end is to your left. Opposite the Brake unit, on A-side, is the Aux Res.

Thanks, I'm a little mixed up - it's 1 and 2 or A and B? You've used both.

What if I'm inside the Comeng T car - I'm looking for an internal clue?

I was told it was something to do with the way the internal light covers were attached - screwed on one side, but I don't remember which side referred to which end.

Nos. 1 and 2 end refer to the ends of the carriage, ie the ends the bogies and couplers are on

A- and B-side refer to the sides of the carriage, ie the entire length of the car along one side. On the side of Sprinter railcars the A or B is printed on the side of the car on the underframe

Australian National were the only ones IIRC to refer to the No.1 End as A End and No.2 End as B End, with actual A End and B End lettering appearing on the EL class. Perhaps this is where the confusion started.

Ahhh, gotcha. At this stage I was only referring to the coupler ends.

Glad to see Jim that i'm not the only person having trouble getting on the the "other place" as well - thought it might have been just me.

Correct, your diagram has A and B sides the wrong way around.

Jim,

On all trains, the Driver's cabin is number 1 end.

Comeng Trailer - The screws in the light fittings inside the carriage point to number 2 end.

Hitachi trailer - easy'ish way to tell...number 1 end is the amber light inside the saloon near the wall, on the ceiling (it will be illuminated unless there's a problem).

X'Trap trailer - As TCL said - pantograph is number 2 end.

I'm assuming you mean the amber light on the PLC box?

Double check your stage 6 notes. You're mixing the PLC light in the Hitachi up with the air-con fault light in a Comeng. Hitachi will show the amber light to say "PLC active", Comeng shows an amber light to say air-con failed.

Sorry my stupid mistake. Yes, I was referring to the PLC light. I meant to say that it will be illuminated (unless there's a problem). Edited my original post.

I have no idea what the stage 6 notes are :p

As in, I know they're driver's training tools, but beyond that....

McLovin, Bravus and I are all train drivers (or at least trainee ones).
Stage 6 is where we learn, in a fair amount of detail, about each of the different types of trains.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks for the clarification!

Cheers, Lachlan.
